UDS Build

Postby 2PUPs » Thu Dec 31, 2009 7:12 am

I`m picking up my drum today and would like to know the placement of the cooking racks . I am putting two in . How high off the fire pit should the lowest one be , and what should the top one be at from top edge of barrel . Also , how do you keep the thermometers in place through the barrel .

If you go to my web site, under the pics section you will find some basic UDS measurement drawings for the different size drums and types of lids that I have used for building UDS's.

Most thermos just require a hole drilled and the thermo usually just has a washer and nut to secure it to the drum.

Don't forget to burn off the liner that is on the inside of that drum. Now would be the best time to do it.

Should the intakes extend into the barrel , if so should they be under the fire basket or just to outer edge of it ?

I always use short nipples ( 1" - 1 1/2" long ) they don't need to stick into the drum any farther than to put a lock nut on the threads.

These are what I use.................

Got my two upper grates in barrel and intake and exhaust done , Just need to get grate for water pan in and put temp gauges in and handles for lid . Also need to cut down the intakes and exhaust a little more , left them long during build , and afix the air intake ball valves ,and finnish the coal basket , and she`ll be ready to go . I added a pic of what it looks like , not your typical UDS , I also have another one I am doing to the normal way of doing it , I just wanted to see how this design would work , I like the unusual things , as you can see from my build . If it dont work , oh well atleast I tried . To all the people that have helped me with info , I really appreciate it , thx so much.

I was thinking more along the lines of getting some friends into cooking. They can't/won't (read married with a ring in the nose instead of on the finger) spend $$$ on decent store bought pit and some have done the ECB trip with bad experiences. Figure if I can get my investment back and some folks into Qing, well it would be worth it.

I'd be willing to bet I'll be holding on to Einstein and Roma longer than I will an UDS.
