lighting fires
I dont understand using a weed burner torch to light a fire in the pit, or fluid for that matter. I have not bought lighter fluid in years.
I use a charcoal chimney starter with those starter match sticks (duraflame log type material). Once the charcoal is good and hot I dump it into the fire box and load sticks of wood on top. 15 minutes later I have a roaring fire in the box.
Its just that simple and easy.

Re: lighting fires
I don't use a weed burner, but do use a MAAP torch.
12 seconds in 2-3 spots, and wait for the lump to heat up. I have chimney starter, but I can have it lit with the torch that I keep in a tub under my grill table faster than I can even walk to the garage and get the chimney starter.

Try drizzling a little olive oil on a wad of 2 paper towels... Works great, not near as much ash and doesnt smell as bad.

That's what I do, but I still use the torch now and then - must be a country boy kinda thing!

I use a weed burner and LOVE it. Stack my wood up , put the weed burner on it and let it do its thing. I always get a few people coming up and saying man thats a great idea.

I do think the weed burner is a good idea. But I am on the cheap and have lots of time. I do some time spray the paper with Pam spray. CF

Re: lighting fires
There are many ways to light a fire, but the weedburner is a Man Thing. Nothing gets the attention of neighbors or anyone close by like the sound of a weedburner. It's that manly jet engine sound that gets them every time.

If you do the chimney like Pony Express says above you won't have any trouble, that is how I fire the chimney. I do have a weed burner and a acetylene torch but like CF I got time too and if I don't just flip the switch on the pellet machine I fire up the chimney with the sticks.

My weed burner is my friend, and yes it can draw a crowd with all the jet engine noise.

Re: lighting fires
My thing is, when using a big pit, that weed burner kinda "preheats' the cooking chamber while startting the fire at the same time. Thats why i use one.
