There's a place in Kilgore that has killer bbq, but can't remember the name off hand. I'll have to ask my wife. She is a native East Texan....

I'm thinking that "average" or even "poor" Q in your area is potentially much better than "great" Q in my area. Not really impressed with any of the places in my neck of the woods.

The Country Tavern on HWY 31 just outside of Kilgore. Best ribs in East Texas...my 2 cents.

:)

Everybody keep the tips coming, but my wife let me change the route to start with, kinda a reverse route, gonna go to Taylor first, might be a 2nd Street adventure, then to Elgin, over to Brenham, then head back up northeast. So hopefully I will be full of BBQ by the time I arrive, if thats possiable. But I gotta have breakfast somewhere huh.

Baby J's in Palestine is certainly worth a stop for their pulled pork sandwich. Sure, I know that pulled pork isn't traditional here in Texas, but it's darn tasty. I'm pretty sure that it was the strength of that sandwich that put them in the Texas Monthly top 50 last year.

If you ever drive through Lufkin, Bodacious BBQ is my favorite. It's not far off of 59.

I second the Country Tavern. Great ribs!
