Build Thread

Postby jlabolt » Sun May 03, 2009 6:26 pm

Got some free time this weekend to work on my build project. The tanks ready for the sandblaster. I wasn't going to have it sandblasted, but after reading some of these posts it seems like the right way to go.

First cut for the firebox.

Had a little spring back on one of the doors, but we got fixed pretty easy. I bought the hinges from kck.com and they worked out great. Doors still need to be trimmed up.

Firebox is all cut out and ready to be welded.

Hopefully I'll have it finished by the first of June at the latest. Can't do much this weekend as it's my sons first birthday and mother's day. Hoping to at least get it back from the sandblaster though.

I'm looking into paint for my pit. I know about the rustoleum high temp, in fact, my UDS is painted with it, but I'm looking around for a good high temp primer. Everything I see is a zinc dust primer. Anyone know what "zinc dust" has to do with it and if it's ok to use on bbq grill.

Great start to your build! I can't wait to see pictures when you get it rolling. I have 2-250 gal propane tanks right now that I will be making into pits this summer. On the pit below, that I just finished, I bought 1 gallon 1200 degree paint at sherwin-williams. They only sell it in quarts and it was pretty cheap. I was pretty impressed with the way It shot. I used a HVLP gun and thinned with xylene. It turned out pretty good.

Been working hard a few hours at a time and it's slowly paying off. Much thanks go out to my buddy Stan for accommodating me in his garage for this lengthy period and giving me the ins and outs of stick welding. Couldn't have gotten this far without him. I was going to send it off to the sandblaster, but one of the maintenance guys at said his cousin had and he said I could use it. Picked up the sand today and hopefully, weather permitting, get it blasted and painted Sunday.

Firebox is taking shape. Just some finishing work left and mounting of course.

First Smoke??? Just a small fire to help with odor, although, it's not really noticeable. I got lucky on that one I guess. Thought I'd do a little burn just to be on the safe side.
