Postby Fast Freddie » Sun Jun 08, 2008 3:56 pm

No smoking today. It's a grilling day.
Pork steaks.
Hot Italian sausage with caramelized onions and peppers.
Apple Chicken sausage for the kids.
Pinto beans with a lot of bacon and Aundouille sausage.
Grilled local white corn, lightly charred with cilantro butter.
And plenty of Gold Margaritas!!!

Really like sausage with grilled veggies! Nothing wrong with the margarita's, either! (Where's the pics?)

I was born and raised in New York with a lot of Italians in our family. It's not que, but they are some mighty fine eats. I was also raised on Spiedies.

I am from Binghamton. Lived there from 1950-1980. Moved to California in 1980. Always got them from Sharkeys or Poncho's Pit. I had a lot of friends who worked those places and I have their recipes. My grandmother had a bar and restaurant on 20 Squires Ave. She was there when the first IBM building was built. The building is gone now. IBM bought out the whole area. Sometimes I would walk up the street to Lupo's, or go to Romas or Nirichi's for Hot Pie!! I sure miss the food. Small world.

I've got friends that visit from VA. And bring home Nirchi's when they go home..We also have to send the speidie survival kits over the holidays! But as we all know, nothing goes better with speidies that Salt Potatoes. I have heard that they are another regional treat that is starting to spread!!

On the IBM Note, since they have been having thier problems, that whole area has become pretty run down and struggling. But on a good not. Poncho's and Sharkeys are still runnin' strong and Rocco Nirchi just opened a fine Dining rest. on The Ave in Endicott, sold his Franchises for the pizza shop, but they still make a good hot Pie

I brought a suitcase of salt potatoes home two years ago, after my moms funeral. My sister lives in Liverpool, a suburb of Syracuse. Her home is a few miles from one of the largest farm stands that grow the potato. Everyone loved them.
I worked for Universal Fence Company during the day, and was a bouncer at AMPS on Clinton street at night back in the 70's when it was a biker bar. Those were real good times. Clinton Street was my hangout.
I remember getting whole, large rectangle double cheese hot pies from Nirchis for $4.50. This was at their original store on top of the hill in Endicott.
Sharkys use to have a Tuesday special of $.25 a dozen for steamed clams.
Out here we pay $5.00 by the pound. It's real expensive that way. My wife is a Coonass, so I learned to eat a lot of Cajun food, and she learned to eat a lot of my Slovak food. We live on an Island and there is a 1000 miles of waterway around us. It's great for boating, and it is great for getting free crawfish. The ones here differ from Louisiana. They are a blue color and get quite large.

Well, my mom went into laber with me after eating at Sharkey's in '78. But i remember seeing Amps when my grandmother took me for walks down Clinton St. Clinton st. has gone downhill. I do often still hear stories about the clinton st run! Wish that was still around. I work with a lot of guys that Grew up in the 1st ward, so i am well versed in the legends
PS the original Nirchis is still there, Closest one to my house actually

Everyone had to try the Clinton Street run when they turned 18. Back then it was the legal drinking age. Not many made it. My dad was born on #1 Berlin Street, right around the corner from the Union Hotel.
I went to Saint Cyrils school, when I was young.
