What do you use to clean your grill?
Hello, I'm a senior industrial design student (industrial design can be considered the umbrella term for product design). This semester I am working on a tool to make cleaning the grill easier.
If you do take the time to answer this question please also include: what type of grill you use and any problems or improvements you've noticed when using your method/tool.
Thank you

Thanks for the welcome and reply woodenvisions. Good to know heat is important in cleaning as well.
Happy grilling.

Welcome to the forum.....and good fortunes on your endeavor...
For cleaning the grates (grease and carbon) put them in a black garbage bag toss in a cup or so of ammonia, seal and leave in the sun for a day. Follow with brushing and jet spray with hose.

Thank you. I figured the wire bristles would be popular but I didn't know if those who used their grill more frequently also used them. This has been helpful.

Re: What do you use to clean your grill?
Cleaning a grill is BBQ 101 and the easiest thing in the whole BBQ game to do. A properly seasoned grill can be cleaned with a standard bbq brush easily. If it's absolutely necessary, a burn out and re-season can be accomplished. I usually do that with all my pits on a semi-annual basis anyways. Grill cleaning isn't exactly rocket science and those that have problems cleaning it up are nothing more than inexperienced, not ill-equipped.

I do the same as OldUsedParts: Heat (carbonize whatever is left on the grill) followed by use of a wire brush.
Now if someone made a robotic wire brush, like a Roomba for the grill, I'd be interested.

Flame heat + stainless wire bristles + elbow grease
+1 on keeping things seasoned like a black iron skillet

Thank you so much for all of your responses. So the wire bristles are pretty popular, do you use that same brush for accessories like skillets, etc? I've also heard of aluminum foil or onions being used.

Re: What do you use to clean your grill?
foil works for certain things but I've never had to resort to foil because the wire brush failed to work

I use my flame thrower on my grates in my smokers followed by either a wire brush or foil then rinse out warm up and re-season. on my grill it is high heat followed by a wire brush then rinse and re-season.

Re: What do you use to clean your grill?
I do pretty much the same thing as k.a.m. For tough spots, I have a wire brush that I put in my cordless drill and get after it.
