Food Sealer

Postby TexMike » Tue Jul 12, 2016 6:49 pm

I'm looking for a vacuum food sealer. There are so many models that I can't seem to pick a clear winner. I thought I would ask the Q cooking experts for advice.

Thanks, Mike

The Foodsaver vacuum sealer is a good one for an affordable price.

Several years ago, I bought a Rival Seal a Meal that was priced right and has done us a good job so far.

Weston is top notch, but not inexpensive. We have the Weston Pro-2300. It gets used a LOT. Being able to use wide 15" bags is a bonus.

Well Mike it's all about it's use and your budget.
If you want to seal stuff with liquid you need a chamber unit. Most expensive. Does not need special bags.
If you want to seal bags wider than 11" you will want to look at the Weston sealers. Well built units but more expensive than the Foodsaver units.
For most stuff the Foodsaver units will work fine just make sure you get the features you want. (I gave one away because it didn't have the "Seal Only" feature. Also you will want the cutter feature.

I have owned three Foodsaver units and give them good marks. I had one different brand similar to Foodsaver but It had a short life.
I have a Weston (Cabela labeled) larger unit it is great but only gets used on the bigger stuff. Since it's just the wife and I most of what we pack is in the 8" wide bags.

For the non chamber units you will normally need to pre-freeze meats so the juice doesn't get sucked up and prevent sealing. All the non-chamber units require special bags but they are easily found.

I have a food saver. Not sure what model but it's was in the $125 range when I bought it. It's done a fair job but I wouldn't by another one or recommend them. I'm getting a Cabela's (Weston) next.

Before I got the Weston when I really needed a bigger bag sealed here is what I did.
Fill the bag with a bit of extra room at top, put the bag in the Foodsaver and do a "Seal Only" on the upper left corner about 5".
Now trim off the plastic above that seal and put the top of the now narrower bag in for a regular vac-seal.

Amazing innovation i tell myself and anybody else that hasn't already left.......

General question -
What are you using the food sealed for?

Left overs?
Some sort of marinating process?

How necessary is this for your cooking?

In opinion CF is right on target, I have the large food saver brand and will from time to time cut bags in half length wise, so the seal only feature is used here, also the cutter is used as well; Weston makes great products, I have one of their grinders, with attachments, a stuffer as well. So the choice is up to you and your needs the 11 inch bag seems to suit our needs well.. :salut:
