I love to cook and that includes grilling, I have just never had the patience for smoking food but I loved eating it. I recently visited a friend's place and he smoked a couple of chickens and a few ribs had a great time and ate some awesome food. Now I am hooked on learning this method of cooking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am completely new to this world.
I recently bought a Oklahoma Joe's smoker!
I look forward to this forum!

I would recommend going to the http://amazingribs.com/table_of_contents.htmlsite and spending a lot of time on BBQ basics in the Quick Start Guide. Then come back to the forums and ask specific questions. Welcome.

Re: New Member from Iowa
welcome to the group. there are tons of experts here in the group with a world of tips and tricks. my humble suggestion would be to pick a meat you want to try and smoke (pork butt is usually a good start since it's one of the more forgiving meats) and get a feel for how your smoker burns (fast or slow, retains heat or leaks a lot, best fuel mix - all wood, mix of wood and lump and/or charcoal). don't for get to season your smoker first before you ever put food in it. there's tons of posts about the best ways to season your cooker on this site.
and finally, if you want a quick and easy lesson on the basics of smoking just about anything, check out Aaron Franklin on youtube.com. he has several video series on how to smoke different meats and he's pretty popular and respected here in Texas. the man knows his bbq much like the folks here.
good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions. these guys have been a huge help for me.
