expanded metal for charcoal basket

Postby smoking gents » Fri May 23, 2014 6:10 am

I see where most baskets measurements are 12"X48". Tractor Supply has 12"X24", 13ga metal. What is your preferred gauge on metal? Has anyone ever just used two pieces bolted together? thanks

standard is 3/4 9 gauge expanded. Metal at tractor supply is very expensive.

Google charcoal basket images and you'll see a ton of examples including some bolt together ones

Would definitely go the lower gauge, as 18 is like tin foil. Won't last a year if you ride it much at all. Firebox on my stainless Klose was 10 gauge and the chamber was 12, because only NASA can afford stainless below that.

Same at Fulton's steel in Denton. I can easily get 4 out of a sheet, plus one bonus from cutoffs, so not too bad. But I use a 16" grate for the bottom, so that adds some cost. I use the expansion for the sidewall, rolled by hand/foot and mallet massage. The #9 holds up quite well.

Thanks fellas. I will do some more shopping around. $50 for a sheet sounds like a heck of a deal. Too bad I live by the coast.

I got some expanded metal from a welder friend. I had an old metal bed frame that I cut up and used for angle iron to make the frame.

I got mine at a metals market here in Atlanta. They have off cuts in an area that you can pick through. Paid $17.00 for 3/4 9 gauge expanded metal. It was 17" x 64" piece.
