i would be worried that they were "treated" for bugs or rot...

I would NOT use shingles to smoke with! They would have been treated with chemicals for fire resistance and insecticide.

Now if you are getting slab oak, the discard that is not made into shingles, that is different.
If you are getting shingles from some good old boy that is making them himself and is not a commercial product, that is different.

Shingle Oak is one of many oak species....not oak shingles, but Shingle, the tree...
