Kreuz Market, Smitty's and Black's in Lockhart
In the past month I have made the 200 mile trek to Lockhart twice and hit all 3 places for a comparison. I have always been a fan of Smitty's but the last 2 trips Kreuz had produced a superior product. At each place we order 1/2# fat brisket and sausage. I prefer Black's sausage due to the stronger smoke flavor but my two accomplices are split between Kreuz and Smitty's on the sausage. When Smitty's has prime rib, it the best thing in town but the last two trips I was a little late and the prime rib was well done and I simply won't eat it anything above medium. (prefer med rare) These places have changed my whole perception of what BBQ should be. They cook relatively hot and fast, use only salt and pepper and cook over post oak only. Simple is the key!

Ditto. Went to Smitty's on the last couple trips...there is something about the simplicity that makes it great for me.

Wish I had made it to the other two. Left Kruez so full we couldn't hardly move. It was my first experience with a place that doesn't serve sauce. I though that was the coolest thing. It says "eat this, it's the best. Don't need anything to cover it up." can't wait to get back and try them all.

Crack, not sure where you are traveling from, but next time add Luling to your stop. To me, City Market in Luling leaves them in the dust.

Did City Market last year and it was very good. Next target is Franklin's in Austin and Fargo's in Bryan.

Thanks Tex, a buddy told me there was a good Q joint somewhere in Conroe on 105. I don't really trust his opinion cause I have tasted his cooking and not sure that he'd recognize good. I make it to Conroe about once per week. Any suggestions?

Well, to tell you the truth, I have a rule about not going to any "BBQ Place" that I can't see any smoke coming out of or at least behind the building. LOL. And there seems to be a lot of those around here. There is the County Line on Lake Conroe, but I have only had ribs there once, and won't again. He could be talking about Vernon's on 105 west towards the lake. I haven't been there
I am sure all of these places have something that someone likes, or they wouldn't stay in business. Not trying to sound snooty, but I imagine most everyone in here will cook better Que than what you will buy at a store. And not to run them down, because I couldn't feed 300-500 people a day the way I cook on a consistent basis. I guess it's a trade off.
But I do like to try different places, just so I know what's out there. Let me know sometime you are in the area and we will hunt it up!

Well, if you are going to Franklins, remember to plan on being in line before 10am to be sure you get some food. You can also hit John Muellers in Austin, which keeps it pretty simple and good. If you come on a Saturday, start early and hit Snow's on the way in, and then stand in line at Franklins while you recover your appetite, and then finish it off with Muellers. That is a heck of a trip, and some darn good food.
Today, I hit Millers Smokehouse in Belton, while I was there doing some work. It was very good, and at least today, it was one of the top BBQ joints I have eaten at. I need a few more trips to confirm the consistency, but the brisket and pork ribs were just awesome this summer day.

My buddy Yoda hit Barbecue Alley last year, and I trust his judgment. He did brisket and the ribs, and voted City Market well in front of Kreuz's.

Well in Taylor, you got two really good choices. The beef ribs at Muellers can't be beat, and the brisket and ribs are often 'can't miss' at Taylor Cafe. I just wish Elgin still had Crosstown. That place just blew the other joints in Elgin out of the water.
