Smoke a sirloin roast....smoked sirloin is outstanding but I've never done an individual steak.

Smoked the roast and grilled the steaks over wood to give it the flavor. Always my favorite.

Re: Any experience BBQ'ing a steak?
My preferred method for steaks is hot tubbing and then searing - obviously this is not BBQ'ing
Season with just salt or your favorite steak rub ( a rub without sugar)
Vacuum pack or zip lock
Hot tub for 1 hour in hot tap water (will be any where from 105 - 115 degrees)
Change water every 15 minutes
Sear till your desired doneness - get the grill as hot as you can and sear directly over the coals
I get my egg up to about 600 degrees and get close to the coals
Benefits of hot tubbing - the sear only takes a few minutes and the steak will essentially be the same through the thickness instead of just the middle
A good instant read thermometer is real handy to make sure you don't go beyond your desired doneness

I get the steaks cut thick, about 1 1/2 to 3 inches, sear on a super-hot grill or pan for 1 minute or less per side , then finish on a very smoky pit until they're done. I'm not that qualifies as smoking them but they're sure good. I've tried with rib-eyes and tenderloins.

Don't know if this counts as smoked or not either.
I do mine similar to kayakbap. I put the steaks on a grate right over the fire for a minute or so on each side, then I move them away from the flames and finish them up indirect until they're done. The side of the pit opposite the flames is usually pretty smokey. I don't pay attention to the temp on the smoker when I'm cooking steaks.
My hard part is about timing. The wife likes her's medium-well and I like mine medium-rare. I try to time the steaks so that they are both "close enough" at the same time. I think in all my steak cooking I've managed to do this twice. Luckily both times where when we were having nicer steaks (rib-eye the first and filets the second).

I've never hot tubbed a steak. Sounds fishy to me but those steaks egghead posted look great. I might have to try them. Has anyone else done it? Any tips?

I'll stick to smoking whole beef tenderloins and cutting them afterward instead of trying to do individual steaks.
One of my favorite ways to do it.

Whole tenderloin is mightyfine - have done a few lately
Rubbed - Have used a coffee rub the last couple times and like it
Seared and then roasted
Sliced

Have smoked steaks from the freezer completly frozen, ribeyes , good if your in a somwhat of a hurry. IE , sitting aroung the pit and think, darn I'm hungry. Throw them on frozen or slighly thawed with some seasoning. It's not for everyone, but what a smoke ring. Should not take any longer than 30-45 min. Good steak in a pinch. It's different, but good when your hungry!
