BBQ For The Troops - A Day Of Healing - Ft. Hood 12/11/2009
From Del King from bbqforourtroops.com,
I have been asked to do A BBQ at Fort Hood, Texas. It is part of what they are calling A DAY OF HEALING
We will do the entire base and all family members. We plan on feeding around 60,000 people. We will set up on Dec 10th to serve on Dec 11th. I need all available smokers and personnel to let me know if you will be able to help in this large task. I also need donations to pull this off. I will be asking for Rubs, BBQ Sauce and volunteers. I know it is at the last minute but they didn’t expect someone to come a shooting on their base. Let me know if you will be able to help in any way contact me at del at bbqforourtroops dot com. Thank you in advance.
Any help is great, if you have a cooker, can help serve, runner, anything we will greatly appreciate it. Short notice, but well worth it.
We will be heading up there on Thursday AM 12/10.....
Thanks y'all......

Hey Toon... If Mark can't make it with Matilda, maybe I can come down and help with your crew?

Well, scratch what I said before. I talked to the wife and she gave me permission to go. Will probably go Friday morning though and just help serve or whatever they need.

Never done one, but looking forward to it. I did hear that they have had 15,000lbs of chicken donated and a company is providing sausage. They were still in search of a brisket sponsor and someone is trying to contact Mrs. Bairds about their big smoker. Many questions for sure, but we should get the answers soon enough.

I have done quite a few of these events . Its tough work, but well worth it. What are your questions? Bring food and drink for you and your folks who come with, I bring plenty and love to share. Cots, chairs, tables, utensils, knives, bring it. We set up near Hood Stadium in a BIG grass area, plenty of room. There are a couple Mules/ATVs that run around bringing meat and wood (which is provided, I load my wood bins as well). Its an all night cooking event, if we are doing brisket as well, good times man. Im sure I have left some out, if you have a question just ask.
Oh yeah, if your coming on Friday GET THERE EARLY, there is going to be HUGE lines getting on the base. Pits/trailers go thru a different entrance, HUGE x-ray machine, can't remember the name of the street, but I will get it and post it.

This was the email i got.. let's go get it done!!! we know what to do pass the word...
Joey,
You may have heard already, but Ft Hood will do a Day of Healing on Dec. 11th. I had the honor of cooking for Ft Hood commander Lt. General Combs and his wife at a military appreciation dinner we did in Gatesville. We spoke about what we could do as a group and it has led to this event. I briefed Del King today and he has already made post on some forums. We will feed the entire post except it will be more like a booth feeding where each family will have so many tickets
to use. Right now Tyson food has donated 25K in chicken. There will be sausage, burgers, hot dogs also ,but no mention yet of brisket, although Del is trying to have some donated. The Generals wife is my contact and will be back in touch next week. I hope you can help and recruit all your fellow cookers to do so. I realize Fredericksburg is that weekend , but we will be through cooking by mid afternoon and people could still make it if they can stay awake.
