Texas BBQ Forum A-Store to support the Site?

Postby WBBQ » Fri Oct 16, 2009 8:44 am

I have seen this on another forum. I was thinking that this might be a good way for the members to help support the forum. I was thinking that if a link was added for members to shop on amazon through this Forum then it would be another way to support it. I bought my WSM 22 1/2" smoker through amazon and the wife and I do a lot of Christmas shopping online these days. If your going to shop online anyways, might as well help send a few bucks in the way of the Texas BBQ Forum.

Just an Idea (EDITED TO ADD: and if this is against any forum Policies and interferes with the Forum Sponsors then please disregard.)

I don't know how much revenue the Amazon link provides, but I do know that several forums have that feature set up and it's not an intrusive ad like Google ads etc... And I do shop on Amazon more than any other on-line retailer.

Anyone know what the kickback, err referral fee % is that Amazon pays back? Back in the day, I had a Barnes&Noble online store where I was supposed to get a check quarterly. Had folks buying all their books through my "store". Never saw one red cent  Hence, that caused me to ban all third party ads on my site. Still bugs me when ever I walk into a B&N to this day.

The worst parts about an Amazon store are the banner ads they put on there and anyone who clicks and goes there, Amazon sends a cookie to your computer so you can view the site ( all web sites do this ), but attached to the site cookie is a tracking cookie so that they can tell what you look at and where you went on the site. I don't know for sure but I was told the tracking cookie also records anywhere you go on the web.

Starts with 4% and goes up to 6% after you have had referred 4 items or something like that. If you set up a direct deposit there is no administrative charges. It pays out after your account reaches 25 dollars, I believe. You have control on what your widgets or banners look like or you could just set up a link that would send someone to the amazon home page. Like James said, they are not as intrusive as the google ads.

A few comments about this subject:

I like the idea of getting $ to help pay for the forum.

I dont like banner ads...its a long story, but in short, we have never allowed banner ads here.

Our goal on TBBQF is a nice clean looking forum without a bunch of ads flashing, distracting our members. Many forums subsidize the cost of the forum with banner ads. We plan to be different here and keep ads to a minimum.

So far we have been fortunate and really appreciate our sponsors. They have supported the forum and as long as we can pay for the forum with small number of "select" and "relevant" sponsors, we will keep heading in this direction.

We may look at doing things differently as we grow - so all ideas are appreciated.

I really like your attitude towards $$$$... I like this forum so much that I wouldn't mind helping out on my own free will. I am offering and please don't stifle my blessing... What is the paypal email for something like a small donation? It will be coming from my heart only.... Thanks for a wonderful BBQ forum!!!!!!!

Thanks Sapo - much appreciated. I suggest buying something from Ddog, Cedar Park Wrecker or Texas Food -> these folks keep the lights on for everyone and any business you give them, comes back to us in the form of Sponsor money.
