lot of pit builders use butane tanks are they rejects or can u buy them just curios

Sometimes you can find tanks that have failed pressure testing... Harder to find, but that would be my preference. Those brave enough to cut into them often use used/retired propane tanks. As far as I know, butane ain't used as much as propane down here.

Mine was a condemned tank. Means that it could no longer be legally refilled.
Several reasons, rust beyond limits, removed data plate. Mine was due to a missing/removed data plate. Tank itself was just fine. You have to call around to the propane sellers and ask if the have any condemned/junk tanks for sale.
Now if your talking about buying new never been filled with a gas?
of course you can. Thats how people get tanks at their house.

Reject tanks are used all the time. Lang used to buy new tanks that were rejects from a tank manufacturing company for their pits. They now use rolled steel.
Just be careful cutting a used tank, if you don't know how, take it to someone that does. It can be very dangerous.
