am building a vertical smoker with offset fire box.
internal dimensions ar 25"x25"x48". with 2" insulation all around.
what dimensions does my firebox need to be?

On your horizontal offsets, the firebox should be about the same size as the pipe you are using. I.E. a 24" cook chamber would have a 24x24 firebox.
I saw the Stumps SW 223 once which is a single wall vertical smoker with an offset firebox. The cook chamber on it is 20x20x36 if I remember right. It looked like the firebox on it was about 18x18.
A 24x24 would easily work for you. A 20x20 would probably work fine since the smoker will be insulated. I have a Stumps GF 223 which is the insulated vertical and the charcoal chute on it is about 6x6x36. However the charcoal only burns about 6-8" up the chute.
