Smoker 2.0 reverse flow

Postby tantrum95 » Mon Jul 01, 2019 9:35 am

Well I am new here and I am on build number 2. This is project is bigger than my first one and I don't know if it will be better. Any thoughts? I am looking for ideas to make it look like a pig :pig: .

My first smoker (and current) is sourced out of a 300 gallon propane tank cut down to 220 gallon. Several mods included getting the stacks the right size (3 attempts), fire box sized right (2 attempts), but now it is dialed in. Started in 2015, finished mods in 2017.

My new project is sourced from a 500 gallon propane tank, again this will be a reverse flow. I am building this one for my brother in-law...I forgot how much work these were. If I don another one it will be a lot smaller. :D

I hope to have it completed for a BBQ at the end of July.

Thanks! I am learning a ton here. You guys have a lot of great information.

We have been cooking hole pigs (100 pounders) mostly with a couple rib cooks, and this year I think we have 3 pigs scheduled, last year we cooked 7. Lots of work but they are sooo tasty!

Update on the big guy. I did a little more work by adding chimneys and damper. These are 3 foot long and 6 inch diameter. This thing is almost 8 foot tall now. I hope to have it ready by the end of July.

I had to put dampers on the stacks but they were too tall to reach so..

Here is one more standing back a little. I added a hammer for a handle to open the door. With the counterweight it is a one handed operation.

Nice work! Do you do anything to insulate the area between the cooking grate and the baffle plate, or is radiant heat a non issue?

I hope it won't be an issue. My little (funny) one doesn't have a problem getting an even temp. but this one might since the fire box is partially in the cook chamber. I hope to have it done by August so we can test drive it on a whole pig. Start big, what can go wrong? :dont:

I had a little time this weekend so I stuck this together. The fire box is 38"by42" so the grate is pretty big and heavy. I did test it out by sliding it 3/4 out of the box and standing on the end so it is plenty strong.

The list is getting smaller...

Got the smoker back from the sand blaster. They went to town on the trailer too. So now I am continuing with a clean tanks and trailer. I hope to have it finished next week.
