The guy told me it was hickory.
It was free, but don't want to use it if I don't know what it is.

I'm saying white oak. Smoothish bark, nice tight straight grain structure, really pale. Hickory I see has much rougher bark.
BE WELL, BUT NOT DONE

Bobby: "No."
Hank: "Well, there's really no wrong way to do it."

This is a hickory. Pignut hickory that's in my back yard. The bark looks much rougher than what you've got.
I'm not sure how many species there are exactly, but that's not pignut and certainly not shagbark. Lol

The only way you'll ever really know is if you watch them cut it or you cut it yourself
As for as ID goes I'D use it on a small cook and then decide

Bummer, this guy has a lot and at no cost to me.
Does anyone think it's bad to try?

There's more than a few "breeds" of hickory, try burning some and see if the smoke smells right.
