Sorry for the newb question, but kinda confused. I usually buy a pork butt and it says butt or shoulder roast.
My wife went grocery shopping the next town over and found on sale pork butts. When I got home I seen they said Whole Pork Butt on them. What they mean by whole?
Thanks.

Re: Pork butt question
It has been my experience that when it says whole it could be part butt and part shoulder, basically cut from the same area of the hog. I have seen the same cut of meat called different things depending on region (Boston butt, etc) Not to worry, whatever she came up with will be great. Only thing I look for is whether it is bone in or not. I think bone in usually has better flavor, and the built in doneness test is great too.

Re: Pork butt question
What we call butt here is from higher on the shoulder and has like a 'seven' bone. Then there's picnic, which has a round bone and is from lower on the leg. Both are good; the picnic has a thick fat cap and really thick tough skin on the cap. It's usually cheaper.
What kinda bone does it have?

Re: Pork butt question
On one end it appears to have a thin bone..almost blade shaped and the other side has a round bone. Don't notice a fat cap.

It is a whole butt not cut in two or trimmed down.

Pics would help. If it's a whole butt, I wonder if you could cut it into the picnic and shoulder?
