Postby nascarchuck » Fri Feb 02, 2007 11:08 am

Anyone here grill Tilapia? I always just cook it in a skillet, but wondering how it would do on the grill?

Its great...can't say that it is better than grilled bream with lemon peooer tho!!!!! :D :D

Make sure your grill plates are oiled up good and sear 'em hot ...time kinda depends on how ya lioke 'em...

If they are whole ...bream or tilapia...doesn't take that long at all with a hot fire ..spice 'em up good and watch 'em till they are flaky!!!

With a fish turner

They really do make them  they look like 2 flat spatulas joined together. Check at Bed, Bath & beyond, they carry them down here.

That looks great.
Tilapia is my favorite fish. We have a creek that runs through the middle of our place and they swim up stream from the lake when the waters warm up. DS1 is an avid bow fisher and he keeps us well supplied in the lips(as we call them). Usually starts in April and I can't wait. He didn't get many at all last yr because of the drought but yr before that he got over 60 of them. Yummmmmm

thanks all!
chuck, i do have a fish turner, but i actually have a very large grill spatula that i like even better, simply because the front edge is a little thinner. other than that i just take my time and be really careful.

I like to soak corn husks, and wrap Tilapia or any delicate fish in those, with some EVOO, lemon slices, S&P, and paprika. Grill direct. Tilapia is my favorite besides fresh caught and fried crappie!

Perryranch - I will send you my shipping address! We normally buy 1 or 2 bags of frozen fillets at Sams each time we go (every other week).

Desi - I will have to search for a large spatula. Man, lookin at those dang fish, I'm hungry!

Laura - I have never eaten crappie before. I hear it's alot like tilapia. I will have to remember your method of cooking it. With the Tilapia, I always melt butter in a pan, spinkle a light coat to Tony's cajun seasoning on both side and cook until flakey and appears about like Desi's.

You are like us. We have to usually buy frozen fillets which I imagine are much thinner than those on Desi's grill. I can't imagine putting those on the grill without some kind of protection! They would disappear! One of these days, I want to buy the whole fish and grill it, head and all!!!
I learned the corn husk recipe from Bob on the other forum...

I really like the corn husk idea, have never tried it but am going to.
Crappie is my choice, here we call them white perch. But you can't buy them you have to catch them, witch is a fun thing.

Tilapia, my next choice. We buy them from one of the food service co. You can get the fillets at what ever size you want. We get the ones that are individual wrapped and frozen. Very good indeed. CF

Hey CF... Not tryin to be nosey here, but how much you payin for them Tilapia fillets from the food service company?

I have been buying them at Sams and paying about $11-12 for a 3 lb bag.

My wife knows a lady that her family owns Bassham Foods ( http://www.basshamfoods.com ) in Ft. Worth and they sell all kinds of stuff. They have a cash & Carry store as well. The jalapeno sausage is excellent!!! I will have to check into the Tilapia from there...
