Well today I got my pits legs and I also got the new handle brackets made.

well yesterday started really productive. Got my legs, handle brackets, picked up some more flat bar so I could finish the door straps, and then right when I started to get some work done I ran out of gas for the welder (right when it was too late to get more of course). So today Ill get my bottle replaced and start this afternoon again.

Alright so over the weekend we got a lot done. I finished welding out the door straps/seals, got the cook chamber on the legs, welded in the drain, welded in the angle to hold the tuning plates, and started building the racks to hold the shelves.

(the firebox is just sitting on the ground. That is not where it will actually be placed)








Yesterday I picked up a sheet of 3/16" plate so I can cut out the tuning plates

I need some direction on the tuning plates......I picked up a sheet of plate, and my plan is to cut rectangular pieces and run them the distance of the pit. Knowing this is not an exact science, and it will require some tweaking, what's an educated guess of the amount of tuning plates I should start with? how wide should I cut them? and what is the distance between each tuning plate?

If you look at the pictures we ran 2 pieces of angle in the lower portion of the pit the entire length of the cook chamber. The plan is to cut a bunch of rectangular plates and set them on the lips of the angle. We will make a piece of plate to direct the heat/smoke under those plates and distribute the heat as it flows down the bottom of the pipe. We will be able to adjust the heat by the gaps in between each plate to make sure the pit regulates heat equally

Not sure what part of town you are in, but you can come look at mine if you would like. It was built by Klose BBQ Pits, and has the tuning plates that you can lock down by bolt.

I have an idea of exactly what I want to do im really more curious about how many tuning plates it will require and the spacing between each plate (I know smaller gaps the closer to the firebox, and get larger as I work my way down the distance of the cook chamber) just looking for a good place to start

I can email you some, not sure how to attach them on here. There are pictures from the time of the build. So not sure the spacing is the same after they tuned it, but yours will be different anyway. Mine is a 7 ft. main chamber.

Its secured with a nuts/bolt and washer. The washer is on top of the angle iron which when tighten keeps the plate in place.
