my thoughts are if they are spring type stainless like KAM's then they should not get hot - - - here is one source for those SS handles if you're interested

Im not really interested in the typical spring handle. Im building a pit from ground up I would really like something a bit more custom/unique to my pit if that makes sense

My buddy used old pipe wrenches for his build. Turned out pretty cool.

ruh roh you got my weird fabricating brain started now - - - you could also consider getting some old flat irons and there are many many styles - - some with wooden handles that you could put your own taste to - - - if one fit your design they might make good handles also - - - here are a few on Ebay

I would also imagine that the iron part would absorb ALL of the heat once welded to the door :?:

not very fancy but a little bending of the rod to turn the handle horizontally and these would serve the purpose

Good idea, using that slag hammer
BE WELL, BUT NOT DONE
Hank: "Do you know how to jumpstart a man's heart with a downed power line?"
Bobby: "No."
Hank: "Well, there's really no wrong way to do it."

I used gas grill SS handles and they do not get hot at all. The only thing that I did different was the handles were attached to the gas grill by a #10 bolt and I had a piece of SS welded into the inside of the handle to accommodate a 3/8" bolt since the pit lids are so much heavier.
