Unique options for pit handles

Hey guys, I'm building a new pit and am looking for some different options for the door handles. Looking to see what other people are doing to get some good ideas.

I figured this would be a good thread where people could post some pictures on different yet unique door handles (axe handles, horse shoes, machined pieces, etc)

Just used some No. 7 horseshoes for my new cedar barn doors. The bigger the number, the bigger the horsehoe, I think the biggest are like 9's or 10's for Clydesdales. Tough, workable with a gas torch, weldable, cool looking. One small problem. They are HARD and you need a really good combo drill bit to get through them, my contractor burned up two standard bits (with lubrication) trying to get through one shoe.

I designed this handle for my big cooker and liked it so I used it on my smaller cooker as well.


I designed these years ago and have used them on several cookers including the grill on my big cooker.

Did you cut these brackets or have them made? my smoker is being fabricated out of 36" OD pipe so I like the fact they drop down a bit. I cannot find anything like that.

being an old broke down horseshoer that's worked the forge, I can tell ya that those spring type handles are the best move when you're talking about potentially hot metal - - - great design, KAM

I really would like to do a nice wooden handle or a stainless handle. One of my concerns is that if I run with a stainless handle will it get hot?

I got these from a 13.5'' ring gasket for a BOP. It doesn't get hot.

that's good to hear. What I have in my head is cutting some drop down handle brackets/lugs, and then either run a wooden handle that I can stain, or a nice stainless handle of some sort. Glad to hear yours do not get hot because that was my main concern.

They were cut by a friend of mine in Missouri. But anyone that has a water jet or laser CNC can do it. Just look up water jetting.

Ya I tried a place locally and they asked me for the file I want cut and that I don't have to send them. I was just curious if it was you that cut them, or someone that was familiar with this kind of stuff.

They should be able to convert a jpeg to their file format. Make a drawing to scale then scan it and send it to them it should work. We have a water jetter here in town that does work for me all the time like that.
