I have been thinking about adding 5 more gauges to my smoker. 3 grate level and two more grate level of vertical smoker. Main reason is for larger cooks and to allow me to get to know pit better and fine tuning tunning plates. Would this be ridiculous or a good idea.

You could add them but a more accurate reading would be some digital thermometers and map out your cooker temps with them. I run Tel-Tru thermometers in my cookers and they are dead nut accurate but they are analog and slow to respond. Digital thermometers allow me to map out changes in a much faster time.
I use these from Academy sports.

I made some stands for the probe or you can buy them from Maverick.

I hope this helps.

Re: Extra temp gauge suggestions
I agree with KAM. I mounted grate level thermometers on mine. I was trying to adjust on my end and then realized they hadn't finished reading yet and then I was generally way to hot.
Bought a Maverick ET-733. It gets a nice quick read at grate level and 1 meat temp reading. Plus I can keep the remote part next to my chair in the living room to see how the fires doing :)
Once I upgrade pits I'm looking at getting one of these:

Thanks guys, i do have a Maverick 732 on the way and KAM ill run by academy. I may just do both as once the pits up and stable it would be easier to look at analog then opening and closing doors to move probe while figuring out.

Re: Extra temp gauge suggestions
What I do is put one about center on each cooking chamber. Then I use a couple of Maverick 732 probes on the different racks to learn the difference in the levels. But once I learn this I don't feel the need to be reminded. The center gauge lets me know enough. But I still use one of the Mavericks while cooking so I can sit in my recliner until it's time for more sticks.
