Smoking with rotten/worm eaten oak?

Postby Chasdev » Sun Nov 01, 2015 7:17 am

I bought a half cord of split seasoned oak this summer and about 1/3 of it is wormy.
I've been hacking off the worst of worm eaten sections (reminds me of balsa wood) but sooner or later I'm going to run out of good solid sticks..
Do you guys cook with this stuff or use it to start the fire or toss it out or what?
Or did I get ripped off?

If the person you bought it from knew it was infested then you got ripped off if they did not then you just got a bad run of wood and that happens. This is one of the reasons I prefer buying more green wood than "Seasoned". I control how it is stored. A lot of guys will leave their logs whole laying on the ground to Season, this is not seasoning it is promoting decay and makes poor cooking wood.
To answer your question no I do not cook with worm infested wood I use it for my out door fire pit.

Fire pit or wood stove. It is not a total loss.

Ouch! I'll keep carving off the rotted/soft areas as best I can and dispose of the rest..
