I'm wanting to build a bbq pit, I have pipe, but I need to find some plate. 1/4"
Anyone know where in / around Austin I could get some?

Alway give your local Craigs List a search. You can often pick up leftovers for cheap.
Most metal dealers offer enhanced pricing on previously cut material as well.

If you are still looking Metals 4 U on I-35 has the best prices on metal in Austin. They also have accessories you may need for your pit (stainless handles, hinges, gauges, etc).

there is a salvage yard off 195 about 3 or 4 miles west of 35 they have all kind of steel...
