Under $1000
Looking for something to get going with that won't cost me an arm and a leg but is a good smoker for the money. Something under $1,000. I'll drop the big bucks later on. It will be used for backyard smokin and a couple comps here and there just for fun. Doesn't matter if vertical, offset or combo. What would you recommend?

Re: Under $1000
I use a pellet cooker and am quite pleased with it. Actually it is the 4th pellet cooker I have owned in the past 15 years as well as several stick burners.
Some pretty good ones are available today for under $1K.
Strong points of a pellet cooker:
Easy to use
Easy to clean
Provide unattended long cooks (aka sleep).
Weaker points:
Require electricity, not much but still have to have it.
Require pellet fuel.

Build a UDS < 100.00, Buy a Weber 26.75" OTG 300.00, and an Old Country Over/Under offset 450.00, You will still have Brisket, Booze & Cigar cash left over and enough cookers for you needs; Direct heat vertical, the Versatile Weber, and a Stick burner .
Never met a cow I didn't like with a little salt and pepper.

Re: Under $1000
Ok so I am thinking of just investing a little more to make it worth it. Looking at a offset pipe smoker from Lone Star Grillz. In particular the 24"x40" at $1,900. Thoughts, opinions, pro's and cons?

Re: Under $1000
I did a little research on LSG. I liked what they made and thought it was good quality. the only reason I didn't go with them was that they refused to build reverse flow offsets which is what I was looking for. they said that reverse flow was only a gimmick and didn't really work. I had to stop and question whether they really knew a whole lot about smoking or maybe they just were good welders. it's worth a visit to go check them out depending on what you're in the market for, but in my humble opinion, I'd rather but a rig from someone who both welds and cooks on what he makes. says a lot to me about that person's experience and knowledge of bbq.
just my 2 cents.

Re: Under $1000
Dahlvig, LSG makes a good cooker as well as a dozen other manufacturers. It will boil down to your own gut feeling when talking to the folks selling.
In my opinion I would look at a bit longer chamber say a 24" x 48" or a 24" x 60".
I hope this helps.
