1st place Brisket!

Postby pokersmokers » Tue Oct 21, 2014 3:35 pm

Well finally after doing a non-sanctioned cookoff for four years and taking either 4th or 5th place brisket the past three years...... I finally got a 1st place win this year and there was 82 teams! I just wanted to share this because I have learned alot and got alot of good advice from all of you on this forum! Just want to say thanks for all the advice and now I have the confidence to start doing some more "sanctioned" cookoffs each year. I included a few pics and before I get a bunch of negative comments on how my box looks, this is the only pic I got of our box and it was touched up and straightened before turn in :D Now I just have to work on the ribs and chicken categories, we didn't even make the final tables on those categories.... back to the drawing board lol.

Let me be the first to congratulate you sir, well done! Was this non-sanctioned? Looks like a CTXBA box....

Thanks, yes this was a non-sanctioned event that we do every year, but we do it because it's always a good turnout, so far its been 80+ teams every year for the past 4 years, it is the biggest cookoff in our general area. It is the Rockdale fair and rodeo event. The only rules they have for the turn in box on brisket is Two "show pieces" and 20 bite size pieces for the judges to sample.

Big congrats! To win in brisket is a feat in itself, even without having 80+ teams. Great job!

Congrats! I didnt cook this event this year but cooked it the previous three years. Those three years I placed top 5 in Ribs. Never could do anything else. Could never figure out how to do a chicken box with 20 samples.

You from Rockdale? Thats where I graduated.

Thanks for all the congrats! Competitions are always hard work, but lots of fun all at the same time! I'm def hooked, i've always enjoyed bbq'ing at the house and every since my first comp. i've been hooked! I like the sense of competition and have met alot of really nice people from all over Texas. Btw B&K Smokers why couldn't you make the event this year? Congrats on the previous years! I have always had a tough time with my chicken box as well, I hate trying to get those 20 pieces in that box and still making my box look appetizing lol. Yes i'm from Rockdale, born and raised, I graduated 2005.....
