BBQ For The Troops, Ft. Hood, Tx, 9/27/2007

Postby DaHorns » Sun Sep 16, 2007 4:06 pm

Note: This is a Thursday

We are ready for this event. Still need lots of help, anyone interested in helping out this great cause?

Looks like its going to be, 10,000 troops and their families. We have had all of the food donated by some food service companies, all I know is the quantities of the meat, and they are:

4,000 Lbs of Brisket
3,000 Lbs of Pork Butt
1,000 Lbs of Sausage

There is going to be tater salad, beans, slaw, bread, pickles, onions, jalapeno, and sauce. im sure there will be some form of dessert as well.

We will be arriving on Wednesday morning and have to attend a food safety course put on by the Army. Then we will be setting up camp and firing up the pits that afternoon/evening. At this point I believe there are about 40 cookers coming from all over the United States to assist in cooking up all of this meat. I believe the wood has been donated as well, Im loading up the storage bins on the pit just in case. If you have any questions please feel free to ask or PM me. If your interested in helping out I will be happy to get you set up with Del (the guy setting this event up). This is a great opportunity to give something back to those who give so much. See y'all out there!

Is this the first time y'all have heard of this, I wish I had posted earlier maybe we could have gotten some more assistance. I have been signed up for this for about 4-5 months now.

I believe that Meyer's and Southside Market are bringing their pits to cook all the sausage. The rub was donated by Fiesta Spices and Texas Spice. Good stuff........

:( It is for me. Unfortunately, I get to work, and I don't have any vac days to use. Not that my kettle could do much, but it'd be *something*.

Good luck with the cook, bro. And a hearty *Thank you* to the troops.

Wooooo doogie!!!

What an experience, we had a great time and got to know a bunch of the soldiers of the 3rd ACR (Armored Cavalry Regiment). We (all the cookers) cooked up 3800 lbs of brisket, 2800 lbs of pork butt, and almost 1000 lbs of sausge. The last count we had was a total of 9,000 soldiers and thier families came thru the lines and had a good ol Texas bbq. I will post more about this later tomrrow along with some pics. I'm off to get a shower......

I'm sure the Troops enjoyed the feast! If it weren't halfway across the country I would have been happy to show up and volunteer for Mess Duty 8) It great folk like you make a difference. Congrats on a successful event and thank you for all you did to get R done.
