Quickest/Easiest way to do it is go buy some cheap aerosol cans of oil (PAM, etc) and spray the entire interior of your pit, your grates, etc... Build a low heat fire (in the firebox if you have one) and let it burn for a few hours. Might as well throw some chicken or something on there while you have the fire going. :thap:

Summerset TRL 32" Built-In Grill
Weber Q2200
48" Custom Firepit
Bertello Pizza Oven

Any hardwood seasoned should work fine. I like the free variety. What'cha got laying on the ground around your neighborhood?

I too would same PAM or rub down with lard ... I've used vegtable or peanut oil in the past, but seems to run off once heated because they are too thin.

I rinse the inside out first to make sure any grinding dust or debris is gone. I also run the cookers up to 325° let them dry out then put a light coat of Pam. It doesn't take much and if you over do it the Pam will settle and be sticky. I let the cooker season for a couple of hours then as tex_toby said have some leg quarters ready to cook. The chicken makes fo some nice seasoning meat and good eats.
I hope this helps. :D

these two article / blogs are from a woman who bought some old cast iron
through her research, she learned the best way to clean it
and then she discovered that flaxseed oil was the best oil to season it with
it doesn't dry sticky
here are her two articles, very good reading

a great article on cleaning old cast iron
