KCBS is coming to Texas Gulf Coast

Postby Swamp Donkeyz BBQ » Sun Jun 02, 2013 9:46 am

We cooked for a scholarship fundraiser yesterday. Carolyn Wells, from KCBS, and Brett Hanley, from BBQ Guru, were in attendance. Long story short, there will be a KCBS sanctioned event, next spring, in Huntsville, Texas.

Someone else had posted something along these lines on here awhile back, stating that the KCBS would be coming to TX. At the time I dont think there was a timeline given though. I know there are different styles of BBQ that vary with states, but if you ask me it's ashame that TX isnt a key cog in KCBS comp's and doesnt have more influence until now.

I got a confirmation that the cook off will be held at our local fair grounds. This means every team will have water and power.

I have often wondered why KCBS does not venture into Texas more often. With the number of cook teams in the state, seems like it would be a great oppurtunity to expand. Guess I'll start practicing chicken thighs in December...

Not sure if I like the idea. Two different cooking styles. We cook brisket and ribs more tender than they do. Chicken thighs, really?? Why not the whole bird like we do here? I don't like the idea of a salad bar in a box to be judged. On a plus side they do know how to use a decimal pouint in scoring unlike the judging bodies i'm used to cooking, which results in luck on a tie break.
My question is why do we need KCBS here? Seems like if the judging bodies here would swallow some pride put away the egos and possibly combine to one sanctioning body. Texas is large enough and has plenty of good cooks to make this happen.

I've been asked to get a proclomation so the contest will be a state qualifier. I'll be trying to get in contact with our State Represenative today. I've been told it's a lengthy process but the State Rep can help move it along faster.
