Wood, Hawthorn

I am new to this board and just started cooking BBQ last year. We used Mesquite and Hickory from bags we bought at Cabellas, Both seemed to work well, we also used Some Cherry and Apple wood we were able to pick up int he fall, are there any other woods that might be available in the pacific northwest. I neighbor offered me his dead flowering Hawthorne tree. I know its not fruit wood or one of the hardwoods I have read about, it does seem to be very hard, any idea if that might be a usable source of wood?

I don't think it's toxic,so that's hurdle #1 cleared.
Light a small bit up and see how the smoke smells.
A potato or a chunk of SPAM makes a good test victim for a
quick smoke sesh. Heat'er up and see where it sparks!

IMHO...I know the Hawthorne tree is more liks a big shrub ....and it has small pomegranate type fruit bulbs on it......and its also in the large plant family includes roses, apple trees, apricot, peach and pear trees...

Personally I would NOT cook with this wood until a tree expert or more info was found out.....

Don't know about the hawthorn, but vine maple is used up in your neck of the woods.
