Which BBQ joint would you choose?
Im headed down BBQ Central (I35) next Thursday to New Braunfels. This opens up a whole world of BBQ joint possibilities for me...last time I made a track through Lockhart. Could repeat that or was thinking Luling. Never been to Luling.
What do you say - any suggestions?

the Lockhart to Luling trip is easy (14 miles). you can do both. Get yourself an appetizer in Lockhart and then roll down to Luling. Luling City Market is definitely worth the trip.
if you're in a hurry theres a place just on the South side of San Marcos on Hunter Rd called Southwest Market. really good.

New Braunfels Smoke House is over rated, Rudys there has good turkey and decent sausage, Kenos isn't bad if you're hungry. Thats the 3 I've tried in New Braunfels. Other than that...bring a small portable pit and you're better off. But then again Grist Mill has a good steak and some excellent green beans. The onion rings were pretty good too.

I'm brand new to this forum but not new to BBQ. IMHO you can drive right through Lockhart and go directly to City Market in Luling. Kruetz has not been right since they moved into their new building, their brisket is tough and chewy and tastes like it was cooked in a gas oven. Everybody has their favorites so here goes my list of the best 3 places to get BBQ in central Texas (besides my backyard).
1. City Market Luling
2. Donn's/JJ Catering Austin, CedarPark
3. Rudy's Austin

City Market
Their specialty is meat.
Everything is excellent except the sausage. And it is not that they don't cook it well but the type of sausage they cook is way too greasy for me. No problem, I am not a sausage fan. Brisket and porkribs.
