Tent suggestion

Postby atcNick » Tue May 17, 2011 10:23 pm

I would like to get one of those canopy tents for when I finally do get into a comp so I dont burn my dome. Any suggestions on which one to get? And what size? Im not sure how much space you normally get at a comp?

Most I've been to give you a 30 X 30 spot... size of the tent I would suggest varies with how many members will be on your team. If it's just you the EZ-up is a great route cause it's simple and one man can do it. We use one of those and a 12 X 24 that has to be assembled.

I have a 10x10 EzUp from Academy. I highly reccomend the Straight Leg EzUp because it is all one piece and you can do it by yourself if necessary. They pop up just like an umbrella. I also bought sides for mine.

I bought a 10x20 from costco, a little pricey, almost $300, but it has sides and a door in case of bad weather. Pretty easy to set up too.

I have a 10X20 Hercules by King Canopy. Essentially meant to be a portable garage but makes a great shelter. Has 4 detachable sides. http://www.kingcanopy.com/content/hercules-canopy.asp Its possible to put it up by yourself (I've done it) but it is a whole lot easier if you have a pair of extra hands. 2" powercoat frame [eight uprights, 9 poles front to back and8 rafter poles + 12 connector pipes. Without side walls about 170#. Doesn't transport very well in the bimmer, even with the sun roof open

I would suggest you might want to seriously consider one like DATS has or one of the other 10x20 tents. The popups are convenient, compact and weak I have lost 2 of them to weather. One of them got picked up by the wind and smashed the other crushed from water accumulation on the top. I wasn't under the tents at the time and could have saved the rain collapse but the wind overpowered my hold downs doubt if I could have saved it. I have one more and will be darn careful with it.
I was under another one that got trashed that wasn't mine. I was in the pits at a NASCAR race having lunch with the crew and the helicopter took off from the care center dang popup went straight up in the air about 20 feet turned sideways and came back crunching it.

i got the walmart version of the ez-up. it's a bit cheaper, and I really wanted 2.

they have all the "accessories" to make it a wall tent, and fly nets ect. just easy and a bit cheaper.

i use it more then i thought, not just bbq,,, but people ask what's cooking when i set it up, as it smells a bit like Que.
if your look'n... you aint cook'n

I have a 10' X 10' Quik Shade Commercial. It is easy to put up and better than average construction. The thing I like about it is it has vents at the top which let heat and wind escape (kinda looks oriental?). Bought mine at Home Depot for about $175 but Target has them for $159.

I have a quick shade 10x10 and a ez up 10x10. The ezup is cheaper and seems ALOT better. Only used the Quick Shade a couple of times and its already broke.

12x20, had it since 1998 and its been all over the country at cook offs and dirbike events. Bought it out of BBQ News magazine, dont remember brand anymore. It was like 200 bucks for the connectors and tarp and I still had to go to home Depot to buy the pipes (conduit) Finally had to buy a new tarp a couple weeks ago, had a couple rips in it. It has served me well and I know they are way cheaper now. Tried to find a pic but dont have one of the tent.

I don't do comps, but have sold stuff at swap meets before. I bought a 10x10 EZ-Up from BJ's 8 years ago and it is great. It has a high pitch, so rain runs right off. It also came with sides and a little awning. It's great and held up well. The bag it comes in wasn't that strong though.
