New to the BBQ world

Postby LubbockSmoker » Wed Oct 06, 2010 12:09 am

Just wanted to say high to everyone, and introduce myself.

Texas born and bred, and eaten a ton of BBQ but thinking about getting into the cooking world.

Been married for about a year and a half and we grill about 3 times a week so not totally new to the backyard, but really have no idea where to start as far as BBQ smoking goes.

I guess the first thing is picking the right smoker. I have about a $400 budget for my first smoker. Any suggestions where to start? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome!

With that budget, I would either buy a 22.5" Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker or build an UDS.

I've seen a lot of posts about UDS, but have no idea what that means, or why people like them?

UDS or Ugly Drum Smoker, they are cheap to build. You can have long, un-attended cooking on them like the Weber WSM, because they easily maintain a constant temperature. Remember the old saying, "If you are looking, then you aint cooking."

With a $400.00 budget I would build a UDS get some good thermos, a weed torch, and spend the rest on Royal oak lump some good wood ( pecan & hickory) and meat. Oh yea almost forgot welcome to the Forum.
Never met a cow I didn't like with a little salt and pepper.
