calibrating thermometers???

i bought two thermometers off ebay. they are the ones that has the blue and red temp areas on them. how do i check to see the accuracy?? heard some talk on here. vagly, so how is it done?? also have a digital meat thermometer and regular stick meat themometers. checking that the are right would be nice as well. thanks guys...

Check them in both boiling water and in an ice slurry...on one end of the temp scale, they should read close to 212°, altitude depending, and on the on the other 32°.

What James said ^^^^^ If you know your approximate altitude, you can easily find that correction for the boiling point. As long as you're reading close to 212* F, you're in the ballpark.

im ocean side so near 0 i guess. so ill be shooting for 212 tonight. preciate it!!!

those therms only go down to 100 degrees, so can only check in boiling water

i would have tried to check them in ice without a thought. thanks for the heads up. HAHAHAHAHA............ ;)

FAQ #57 on this link http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm" target="_blank has the procedure and and I nice little App to figure out the boiling point of water at your location. BTW, here in Jamestown it is 198°.
