Toothpick Alternative

I use a lot of toothpicks soaked in water for bacon wrapped chicken, shrimp and jalapenos and they are a pain for me because sometimes the tips burn even after soaking. What I'm wondering is if there's something that Y'all use instead of the wooden toothpicks? I even thought about some stainless nails or pieces of wire cut to size but didn't want to get "toxic" in the process. As far as using them over and over goes, that would depend on the cost. :dont:

Silly subject I know but humor me OK?

I used to see stainless steel "toothpick" on store bought bacon-wrapped fillets.... not so much any more but maybe a restaurant supply would have a source.

Also, when doing ABT's and similar I try to keep the wooden toothpicks vertical and let the dripping grease keep them from burning. This would be on the smoker - directly over coals would be another case altogether. :dont:

thanks, Y'all, most of this would be over direct charcoal heat - - - - I've got plenty of skewers but I was wanting something to keep the individual items together and not having them grouped like a K-bob - - - the reason being so I can turn them separately as needed and move some to the outside of the grill if necessary - - - - 2 or 3 inch max - - - - stainless steel nails or wire sure seem like a possibility

I use store bought bamboo skewers, I just soak for a day in water, I know, a p.i.t.a but best I've found. If grilling I just keep the end of the skewer away from heat. Stainless is next option I guess. Good luck

I use stainless olive holders. They're just a little bit bigger than a toothpick and work great. I ordered a dozen of em online for about $12 with shipping.

There are stainless steel paper clips but they're not cheap. Most paper clips are zinc coated or galvanized steel wire.

Can also just load 'em into one of those SS clamshell fish baskets, the kind with two sides that you squeeze together and look. Eliminates the tooth pickers altogether .
