Length of your thermometer probe

Postby ChadMist » Fri Jul 23, 2010 6:28 am

What is the size/length of the probe are you using on your door dial thermometer? I am looking on getting 2" or 3". I hope to be drilling the holes soon.

Also as far as the hole for the thermometer, where do you recommend on my pit? Centered on the door and in-between each rack? I plan on adding 3 probes in the middle of the racks. (see red dots)

I use the 4" probe to try and get the chamber temp as much as I can. The spots look good to install.

I was thinking the further in I go the better. I am trying to find some 4" one less than 60 dollars anyone know of any place? I would like to use my digital meat probe but I get the cords all messed up then I move my racks in and out.

You've got to look at Tel-Trus, the best on the market. And a 4 inch stem for way less than $60

There ya go...that is what I have on mine. You do have to watch the placement of meat inside as to not poke it with the probe. I've got the black background ones.

i have 6" probes, IMO u need them as close to grate level as possible, no need to check the temp in the middle of the door thats not where u are cooking, if that makes sense........

I was looking at the old smokey probes at Academy and it was saying I needed a 13/16 hole. Is this normal for all probes? There reason I ask is I dont want to cut it and buy some new ones down the road and them not fit.

What do you guys use to drill the holes. I have 1/2 steel door.

The standard for any serious thermometer is 1/2" NPT. So you use a torch to cut an approximately 1/2" hole and weld on a 1/2" NPT nipple. Use teflon tape on the male threads of your thermometer to make it easier to remove later. You can use multiple layers of tape to make the thermo numbering come out right size up (after all you're not holding any pressure in). And even with the best thermometers, take them out and check them every year in either ice water or boiling water, and plan on replacing every 3-4 years. Cheap insurance.
