What do you guys think of this thermometer for an off set smoker?

I dont have that thermometer. I do have this one and love it. It some time though out the cook will loose signal but just walk it up to the transmitter and it will rest itself. It is nice to sit inside and set the temp alarms.

I have the ET 73 and it works pretty well for the most part. The pit temp probe can be fooled in a ceramic with out a deflector in place. It sure takes the guess work out of when a butt or brisket is getting near done. The batteries last forever. In wet weather I put the transmitter in a plastic bag. You can program in alarms (low pit temp, high pit temp, meat is at the selected temp you programed etc. I seldom use the alarms as they are those multifunction buttons and the instruction sheet is printed in micro-font. The 73 comes with reg probes that will short out if they go over 350° (exact temp escapes me just now) but high temp grilling probes can be bought if you want to, god forbid, go hot & fast.

The ET 7 is designed to only monitor food temp but I suppose you could use the second probe with a potato to monitor pit temp.

Know that if you have a hard time believing actual data VS "experience" these things can drive you nuts when a butt or brisket gets to the plateau for hours (sometimes even losing temp) before rapidly rising to the budda stage. If you're relying on an instant read every 15 minutes these will improve your product because you won't be poking unnecessary holes in you meat and remember if you're looking your not cooking.

I have that same thermometer and I use it in my WSM. Haven't had any problems with it. It looks like a "can't go wrong" price, as well.

I've got two of them, they work great. And there are videos out on youtube showing some simple mods that make them better. The transmitter requires that you remove the battery cover to turn it on. One of the mods out there shows where to drill in the cover so you can turn it on without removal. the other I found shows how to add a longer, external antenna to increase the range by 100 to 200 percent. I haven't done any of these yet but I might try them soon.

Post up the link to the one for the external antenna. I would love this.

I use this model and really like it. The remote is limiting and it must have a clear line of sight to the transmitter and I can't be more than 50 feet away. When I'm smoking is when i get a lot of yard work done and this has helped in those situations.

I've (my wife, really) has had a number of different those style of thermometers. A couple have failed after a while. I recall one failed the first time out. Call it a fluke. But I've come to rely on a hand held instant thermometer I got for my wife to use for candy making/baking. http://www.thermoworks.com/products/the ... index.html" target="_blank

We have the Super Fast Themapen. I've used it for everthing from checking my truck's A/C performance during recharging the Freon to cooking Brisket. It's the single most useful tool in the kitchen IMO.

As I said, I haven't done this yet but I will probably try it sometime later when there are more hours in the day. Let me know if you try it and how it works out.

Santa's elf (my lovely bride) whispered to me that I might get a Maverick ET 732, their newest model, for Christmas. Well, it didn't arrive via UPS yet but when it does and I try it I'll post my experiences.

My Christmas present, an ET 732 arrived a few days ago and I will use it for a big cook on Super Bowl Sunday. I will post a review. In the meantime I'm RTFM and drooling!

Couple of quick questions on these. Just got my new ET-732 today. Looks like it's got just the std 3 ft probe wires. Do they all come like that and if you want the 6' wires, you just have to order them separately? Any recommended source for these?

Does anyone have any pics of how they installed it? You need to drill holes and run the wires through and into the chamber, right? If so, how did you seal around the wire at the penetration? Where did you bring the wires in?

Any advice appreciated. I know it's been done a zillion times, but not finding the threads on it now. Will keep looking..thx!

When I had my WSM, I installed this mod http://www.thebbqguru.com/products/Eyel ... ck%29.html . You just slide the probe through. Not enough play to worry about smoke loss.

The 732 has high temp probes, the 73 will short out around 300-350°
