TEL-TRU Thermo mounting ?

Postby 2PUPs » Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:28 pm

I have a TEL-TRU 3' dial thermo I need to install on my UDS . My question is , I want to make it easily removeable w/out haveing to use the nut for mounting , If I drill a hole in the side of drum to fit a wine cork snuggly and drill a center hole through cork for stem to fit through , will the cork withstand the heat or have any adverse effects on the cooking ?

I would think you could have issues with the cork getting brittle and falling apart on you. What you might want to check is rubber stoppers for bottles or lab equipment (test tubes, etc.). Checkout the website for McMaster-Carr (I think it's just mcmaster.com) and do a search. You may not want to buy them from them, but you'll see what they have to offer as far as the various sizes. I was just looking at them a few days ago and I recall they had some that were designed for higher heat applications, like around 550°. Some of them already come with a hole through the center.

No problem. I would at least check out the ones for high temp, but my UDS doesn't get extremely hot so a normal one may be OK.

You may also instead of cork or rubber, have a female nipple added to the side of your uds, and then you can just unscrew it when finished, thats what many of us use on our regular pits so that we can take out our gauges to keep them out of the weather, or to keep them from getting stolen. Just a thought

That's how I would do it. When you're done cooking, just unscrew the gauge and screw in a pipe plug.

Along the lines of what Bluz said, another way would be to use a threaded pipe reducer. the ones with threads on the o/s and the i/s. Put a threaded coupling on the i/s of the drum and thread the reducer into it from the o/s then you can screw the thermo in and easily remove it.

Or you can drill a hole through a SS bolt lengthwise that is little bit larger than the stem and mount the bolt just below your grilling grate. Get a long enough stem to bring it to the center of the drum. You be able to slide it in or out as needed.
