James: Here are pictures of the only top I have to my barrel. The question was, will the crack around the edge be too much exhaust, not enough exhaust, or what?

Also, instead of using expensive ball valves for the air intakes, why wouldn't ordinary brass faucets like you can get at any hardware store work ok. You could really fine tune the air intake with one of those.
Thanks in advance.

Stan, I think a reg faucet would be too small a dia inside to get enough air through. :dont: And if they got too warm down by the fire, the rubber seats or the packing would start to melt or deform and the valve wouldn't work then. The side of the barrel gets hot down by the fire. :D JMHO
The small ball valves are only about $10. A faucet with all brass insides ( seats and all ) is more than that. :D

Jim: After thinking about it a few minutes I believe you are right. I have already ordered 3 - 3/4" ball valves on the internet for $4.47 each + $6.00 shipping on the order. I thought that was a pretty cheap price compared to our local stores.
Thanks for your advice.

OSD - you got it goin' on with that smoker. Looks really good - I like the shelves for your outside accessories. Now all it lacks is some smoke coming out of it!

That might actually be enough exhaust area. The only way to tell for sure is to fire it up and see how it goes... You can always 'create' more open area for exhaust.

James: Thanks for your opinion. That's kind of what I thought. Guess if it's not enough exhaust I can prop it up with a stick. Anyway, have to finish my chuck box.
Thanks,
Stan

Yep, more that one way to skin a cat! These things are supposed to be simple and cheap. They don't have to be complicated.

Very cool! That is a really great job.

BTW - I replaced my 1/2" intakes with 3/4" intakes. I had trouble getting my temps beyond 230 - fired it up last night, and could run an easy 300+ with the intakes wide open. Made a big difference.

No video with mine, though! :(
