hardware list review

Postby jallen013 » Wed Oct 08, 2014 11:25 am

I'm starting to organize my thoughts for my first UDS build. In doing so, I put together the following hardware list from McMaster-Carr (not that I'm necessarily purchasing through them, but I knew they'd have everything). I'd appreciate it if someone else would look it over and let me know where the errors lie.

Specific parts for the firebox are not included in the list - I'm planning on buying one from Big Ed. Grates, thermometers, and paint are also not included.

I know that the risers aren't necessary, but (honestly) I just dig them. I also just noticed that the 1/4" washers are in a 100 count pack and I get that I don't need near that many.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a reason you are using stainless hardware instead of regular zinc plated?
The zinc plated hardware is fine to use in my opinion.

this is the first time i've come across anything other than zinc fittings + heat = metal toxicity.
not having to use stainless would be an easy way to cut costs a bit... IF it won't poison us.

Zinc is harmless, You can even use galvanize because your fire will never get hot enough to do any harm!! :flamer:

K.I.S.S. Unless you can weld and get bored and create complicated fixtures that attach to your cooker. Hey wait a minute I resmble that remark

How interesting - just about everything I've read on this said to use stainless rather than zinc-plated or galv.
It's a little more challenging finding SS parts for everything...
Live and learn i suppose!

I will not use hot dipped galvanized hardware, but zinc plated is such a small layer that it is almost non existent.
