New drum project
Hello all. I am new to this board. I've been reading a lot about these home built drum smokers. I am motivated. And just purchased a 55gal. metal, open top drum that was used to ship lime juice. I'm not sure if it has a liner in it. How would I know if there is a liner in it ? That may seem like a stupid question, but I really dont know what to look for.

If it looks like the inside is painted and is not bare metal, its a liner and your about to have a lot of fun!!! Good luck with your build!!

Re: New drum project
If it's shiny and silver metal looking, probably no lining.
If it's rusted metal looking - no lining.
In your case, it's probably food grade which means it will have a lining.
Food grade linings are generally some sort of plastic I believe - take a knife and scratch the inside, you'll be able to scratch off a bit and see the bare metal underneath.
There's another type of lining that is epoxy based, it's sort of a reddish-orange color; this can be very difficult to remove.
Best of luck!
