Weekend Build

Postby Raider18 » Thu Aug 28, 2014 11:43 am

Ok should get my drum tomorrow. Few questions before I start. I apologize in advance as I'm sure these have been answered before.

With a new drum is a burn out necessary? If so are pecan logs ok? If wood pallets are better Ill use them but aren't they treated?

This drum will be mainly for chicken, will three 1inch inlets (2 will be upright) do the trick to get 350 to hold?

Big Ed I'll be buying one of your baskets once I'm done building it. How tall are they so I know where to put my diffuser rack?

You will need to burn the paint off the outside of the barrell. You can use a torch or just burn the barrel out. I use old pallets just cause i get them for free.

The holes you described will be fine. I use three one inch holes and can get mine rolling closer to 400 if need be, but can easily hold 350 by adjusting the valves.

Where can one find stainless steel conduit washers? All the ones I have found are zinc plated.

There is no reason to burn out a new drum Wash it out with hot soapy water and hang your hardware season & get to cookin. If you want to paint the outside, scuff the surface with a scotchbrite pad wipe it down with mineral spirits and Krylon your favorite colors, you don't need no High temp paint either as it never gets that hot, if it do you have bigger problems to worry about. Those washer s are fine too like I said it don't get hot enough to worry about it.

I have no idea how my holes got so out of line but it will work. Still got to add smoke stack, thermometer and ball valve.

Ugh I dropped my lid seasoning it and it bent. What is the best way to go about bending it without impacting the rest of it?
