UDS liner question

Postby jlh » Wed Jan 22, 2014 1:40 pm

I'm new here and am in the middle of my first uds build. I've wire w
heeled and did a burn and their is still some residue in the pores of the drum. Has any one experienced this and does the residue need to be sanded out to be safe to cook on?Image

First welcome to the forum. Others may disagree but if it was me, I would build a fire in it and cook something. CF :D

Got the cooker done and dinner is on the grill. I do like the way this thing holds a steady temperature, it's like using cruise control! Just hope it doesn't make everything taste like charcoal...

Looking good! You shouldn't get much charcoal flavor. Those things burn super clean.

Well it looks like you have it taken care of, but I was going to ask if you knew what the cargo was in the barrel.
Solid substances like rust are easily removed with blasting because they are generally on the surface, liquids such as oil and what not can actually be embedded in the metal by blasting as you're basically pounding it with a projectile. Burning it out as stated would be your best bet if thats the case as stated.

Thanks, the label on the drum said mango puree. I wire wheeled that thing for two days to get the epoxy out of it. My ears were happy when I was done! I've cooked a couple times on it now and will be doing the first brisket on it this evening. I love the way this thing holds temp; just hope I can get the flavor dialed in. Gonna be using Stubb's natural charcoal with some hickory chunks this time...

It is kind of a novelty item, not sure where it came from (the wife brought it home). It is handy though, from the smoker straight to the table...

I've gotten a couple as gifts over the years - one shaped like a jalapeno pepper and the other the State of Texas. Both now permanently reside on the fence as yard art. Never can find the right sized pepper to use. :banghead:
