grinding your drum???

Postby chaostheory » Sun Aug 04, 2013 11:26 am

I bought a drum that had hog feed in it from a ranch store that I have converted into a UDS. I have burned it several times at +600 degrees. I see a lot of folks grinding their drums inside and out. Im wondering if I should of done the same?? Is it necessary to grind out your drum before using or can you just burn it out??? Thanks for the help fellas!

It needs to be Shiny clean steel on the inside. the only reason to burn one to is if it had a liner in it. If it was bare metal a good scrubbing with Simple green is sufficient to remove any nastiness.

It was not shiny metal on the inside. It looked like it had a little red/orange paint on the inside. Should I grind the insight, Or hit it with a weed burner torch? Thanks for the insite. I dont wanna make the family sick or anything.

I'm not sure if it will work on liners, but EZ Off oven cleaner will remove paint. Not sure what all chemicals would be safe.

Don't know where you are from but you might look into getting a reconditioned bare drum, no liner. From what I understand those lined drums ain't fun! I would rather pay the $41 Dallas Steel Drum wants for a new drum....

Great advice! They are my go to source for all things drum. Nice clean perfectly round drums with steel lids to match are worth every bit of $41. Last year I got lucky and scored some on the cheap because one of their clients didn't like/approve of the color. Got them for $20 ea! If you are within an hour or so of them, worth it.
