Re: First UDS
Surely you could add a gasket and then the lid would fit snuggly?

I don't think a gasket would solve the problem. The barrel is just a tad too big.

Swamp Donkeyz BBQ, very nice work on your UDS. Do not discount her in Comps I have seen a few teams walk very high on drum cookers. The band trick works on undersized lids I would use 1/8" x 1.5" carbon steel its cheaper by the foot.

Thanks to the generosity, and sheer awesomeness, of my wife, I have the thermometer for my UDS. I got the lid fitting right and the maverick mounted. I also gave her a coat of ceramic engine paint.

Re: First UDS
nice! I like the use of the horseshoes for your thermo mounting. I'll be building mine in the new year. I just need to do a little metal massaging around the top of the drum so the lid sits better.

Thanks! I hammered the shoe closed a little so it would cradle the maverick. I used a grinder with one of those sand paper type heads on it, to grond the lip down, and it worked great. My lid fits nice and snug.

Re: First UDS
Some more info on those intakes would be good! What size ball valves did you use, and what's the length and purpose of the extended one? Does that make any difference at all being extended like that?

Re: First UDS
They're 3/4 inch ball valves on the intakes. The one that is extended up, 24 inches, is dual purpose. If I ever decide to put a Guru on it, that is where I will mount the fan. The second reason is I've got a fake leg so it's easier for me to fine tune from there than to bend over, my right leg is sawed off above the knee. The next one I build I will use 1 inch ball valves. When it's cold and windy, like last night, it doesnt want to run over 350. The only time that matters is when I'm cooking steak, and that's what I was cooking last night. Didn't quite get that sear I was looking for.
