DIY-R2D2

Postby Halokitty » Mon Sep 17, 2012 3:10 pm

Good afternoon!

I recently came across a smoker that had been painted like R2D2. I wanted to purchase one and paint it myself. These are the following questions I have:
Should I just paint over the existing smoker paint?
What paint should I use to paint it?
What steps should I take to ensure the paint does not come off?
Is there anything I should do to the pit after I paint it?
I attached a picture of the R2D2 Smoker and the smoker I'd like repaint.
I thank you for your time!! Any helpful comments are appreciated! ^_^

Hi-temp paint like you see engine blocks painted with. Stop in at your friendly paint store and ask around.

Rustoleum makes spray in cans including 1200 to 2000 degree paint made for like engine headers and exhaust manifolds. Outta do the trick.

Good morning!

Thank you for the responses! If I paint over the existing paint from the smoker will the paint chip off? I have 3 months to complete my project and will post pics as soon as I get all my supplies together... ^_^

Would think with good prepping, light sanding and a cleaning agent like a thinner first and using the high heat paint it should not peel off.

I would suggest lightly sanding the existing paint to create a profile on the surface, then wipe down the surface with a thinner or solvent to remove and contaminants or loose particles. Your paint job is only as good as your surface prep.

Good evening!

Thank you for the suggestions.. I really appreciate them. :-)
Is there a recommended brand of sand paper I should purchase and do I sand the pit by hand or is there something that I might be able to rent to help me speed up the process of removing the paint?
After I sand down the pit and remove all the original paint... is there anything I need to put on the pit before I spray paint it with the colors I want?
Also, how many cans of paint would I need if I used the spray paint?
Again thank you for all the suggestions and I think I'm going to borrow your picture Boochimpa as inspiration! :-D
