My New UDS Build

Postby 2PUPs » Wed Aug 22, 2012 3:16 pm

Well, since leaving my other UDS in Florida last year , I decided to make a new version . Its going to have an upright fire box , with a horizontal cooking chamber . I am still in the thinking stage on how to do it . Pic below is start of the build . Got all paint off barrels and the cut-out done on vertical barrel for the horizontal barrel to sit in . Tomorrow I will mark out the cooking chamber door along with the fire box door .

Speaking of fireboxes.
Silly question but how does that work with a "normal" UDS?
I know the charcoal/wood goes in the bottom but once
the fire dies down how do you go about adding more wood?
Do you remove your food/cooking rack and add from the top?
Yeah I know it's a silly question.

You don't need to add any mine will go 20+ hrs on 1 load.

Hey PUP if it where me I would cut a 12X24 hole in the upper and mount a perforated diverter plate over the hole with a center exhaust.

2PUPs, that is a nice project I look forward to seeing some more pics and updates. :D The design is common but most of the guys that built them never got to use them as they are all institutionalized for trying to weld the two barrels together.
Here is a link to a pretty good pictorial that may help you along the way.

Try to get your firebox door as air tight as possible this will help you maintain your temps.
I hope this helps. :D
Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
