UDS question

I'm ready to build my UDS. I have everything needed, got a nice clean barrel today. Food grade with no lid. (10$ Weber for lid) Barrel has a liner in it that looks like it was sprayed in. Do I just burn it out? 6 months accumulating parts. I don't get in a hurry. I figure about $60-70 by the time it's finished. Do any of you have opinion on ball valve on the bottom or with an extension to bring it up near the top? Also want to know where to find an old metal oil drain pan for ashes. Everything I find is plastic.

I had to go CHEAP I went wit three holes and fridge magnets lol they work great

Drill your intake holes, stuff the thing full of pallet wood dump a chimney or two of hot charcoal in on top have plenty of cold beer on hand to watch the burn and burn the heck out of it. Next morning fill the cooler with more beer then put the cup brush on the angle grinder and git busy, your gonna be there awhile with your head in the drum.
I vowed if I build another I will never buy a drum with a liner again!!!!

I used a 5.00 pizza pan from walmart as an ash catcher attached it to the bottom of the basket with 4" carriage bolts capturing the grate between flat washers.

found the oil pan at Tractor Supply for under $5. What about the ball valve? Mount on bottom or bring it up to the top?

Blu, I thought you said to not use 90s on your valves because it restricts air flow. If im not mistaken does yours have a 90? If not what is that set up? thanks man.

A 90 deg turn creates a restriction and reduces the Flow rate by 50% adding a riser pipe will also reduce the Draw if it is to long it begins to act like a chimney. I used a "T" off the close nipple there is a 5" nipple on the bottom to act as a Foot that I welded a piece of plate to and 12 " riser. I draft through the two nipples on the bottom and use the valve to fine tune the temp.
